Seasonal variations in the Amazon plume-related atmospheric carbon sink

چکیده
[1] The Amazon River plume is a highly seasonal feature that can reach more than 3000 km across the tropical Atlantic Ocean, and cover 2 million km. Ship observations show that its seasonal presence significantly reduces sea surface salinity and inorganic carbon. In the western tropical North Atlantic during April–May 2003, plume-influenced stations exhibited surface DIC concentrations lowered by as much as 563 mmol C kg 1 ( 28%) and pCO2 as low as 201 matm. We combine our data with other data sets to understand the annual uptake and seasonal variability of the plume-related CO2 sink. Using flux estimates from all seasons with monthly plume areas determined by satellite, we calculate the annual carbon uptake by the outer plume alone (28 < S < 35) to be 15 ± 6 TgC yr . Diazotroph-supported net community production enhanced the airsea CO2 disequilibrium by 100x and reversed the typical CO2 outgassing from the tropical North Atlantic. The carbon sink in the Amazon plume depends on climatesensitive conditions that control river hydrology, CO2 solubility, and gas exchange. Citation: Cooley, S. R., V. J. Coles, A. Subramaniam, and P. Net Heterotrophy in the Amazon Continental Shelf Changes Rapidly to a Sink of CO2 in the Outer Amazon Plume
The Amazon continental shelf and adjacent oceanic area were sampled for inorganic and organic carbon parameters in order to improve data coverage and understanding of carbon cycling dynamics within this important region. Seasonal coverage of the Amazon plume on the French Guiana continental shelf further north, was provided by CO2 monitoring using a merchant ship sailing from France to French G...
متن کاملEnhanced Methane Emissions during Amazonian Drought by Biomass Burning
The Amazon is a significant source of atmospheric methane, but little is known about the source response to increasing drought severity and frequency. We investigated satellite observations of atmospheric column-averaged methane for the 2010 drought and subsequent 2011 wet year in the Amazon using an atmospheric inversion scheme. Our analysis indicates an increase in atmospheric methane over th...
متن کاملSummer-time Co2 Fluxes and Carbonate System Behavior in the Mississippi River and Orinoco River Plumes
High-resolution underway measurements of surface water pH, CO2 fugacity (fCO2), and total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), along with discrete bottle sample analyses from depths, were obtained in July 2005 and September 2006 in the Mississippi River Plume (MRP) and the Orinoco River Plume (MRP). The resulting data were analyzed to compare and contrast the CO2 fluxes and carbonate system behavi...
متن کاملSilicate rock weathering and atmospheric/soil CO2 uptake in the Amazon basin estimated from river water geochemistry:
Using the data of the CAMREX project (1982–1984) on the water geochemistry of the Amazon river and its main tributaries, it was possible to assess the silicate rock weathering processes and the associated consumption of atmospheric/soil CO2, taking into account seasonal and spatial variations. This study confirms the important role of the Andes in the fluvial transport of dissolved and particul...

1.1 Summary of Activities We have completed a three-year investigation of land-atmospheric CO 2 exchange over Amazon Basin. During the project time span, we have implemented and evaluated a new version of ecophysiology model SiB that is capable of realistically representing seasonal drought in surface fluxes of carbon, energy, and water. Significant modifications have been made to the calculati...
